What is Monumental Masonry?

Monumental masonry is the specialised craft of designing, manufacturing, restoring and installing memorials within cemeteries and memorial parks.

A monumental mason combines traditional stone-working skills with modern technology to create lasting tributes that honour and commemorate loved ones. This work includes the creation of headstones, monuments, memorial plaques, grave surrounds, mausoleums, cremation memorials, inscriptions, renovations and restorations.

Unlike general stonemasonry, monumental masonry requires extensive knowledge of cemetery regulations, memorial construction standards, stone selection, lettering techniques, and memorial design.

Professional monumental masons work closely with families to ensure each memorial reflects the life, values and personality of the person being remembered while meeting all cemetery requirements and Australian Standards.

Members of the Master Stone Masons’ Association Victoria are committed to maintaining the highest standards of workmanship, professionalism and ethical conduct in the memorial industry.

Whether creating a new memorial or restoring a historic monument, a monumental mason plays an important role in preserving memories for future generations.
